Jim Smiley the Hero of the book Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County written by Mark Twain would have to be the best road gambler in literature. He would place a wager on virtually anything and never lost due it being rigged. He had trained a frog to jump really high but was gotten back at when he bet a stranger $40 that it could jump higher than any other frog in the county. The stranger accepted and had secretly fed the frog lead shot.
